Review of 'Twilight & History' Edited by Nancy R. Reagin

We were approached here at TwilightBlog.net by Nancy R. Reagin, editor of the new book Twilight & History, regarding about reviewing the newly released book. I eagerly agreed but remained curious as to what this Twilight book thought it would bring to the already crowded Twilight scene. When I received the book I quickly opened the fresh pages, eager to see if it would be just like all the other Twilight wanna-be books or help-books or if it would stand-alone. Twilight & History distinctly stands alone among a myriad of books that claim to further expand the avid Twis knowledge and perspective of the Saga.

At the beginning of Twilight & History there is a fairly extensive timeline that parallels events in the human and mythical werewolf and vampire worlds. The brilliance of this timeline helps Twis put important events into their proper perspective so that the Saga may be better understood in the proper context. Just a quick glance at the provided timeline gives an instantly greater understanding of context and reasonings within the Saga.

Twilight & History has more to offer than the other Twilight related books out on the market now. Sectioned off into three parts the book first covers the relationships between the three main characters, Bella, Jacob, and Edward, the second is Cullen Family history, and lastly there is some Volturi history. One of the greatest assets to this book is the several analyses of Edward, Jacob, and Bella and different angles of the relationships between the three. While there seemed to be a slight lacking in an opposing position to make it completely well rounded, it was greatly appreciated to have the authors of the analyses explore the questions that people are asking regarding how healthy Bella and Edward’s relationship is. Author Kate Cochran relates Edward and Bella’s relationship to that of Darcy and Elizabeth’s in Pride and Prejudice by saying that: “like all good Byronic heroes, Edward and Darcy feel self-disgust, though it seems to manifest as disgust for their love objects” (17). This is clearly seen throughout the entirety of the Saga, but most often used is the meeting of Edward and Bella in the biology classroom. Judith Leggatt and Kristin Burnett wrote regarding Bella and Jacob and how that naturally, if in a natural world, Jacob was for Bella, however, the mythical aspect of Twilight took Bella away from Jacob. They write: “just as Edward, who in the natural course of things would have died before Bella was born, throws the path of Jacob and Bella’s relationship off course before it can begin, so too does the conquest of North America lead to the relegation and relocation of the Native people…” (28). Sara Buttsworth writes that Twilight is the a-typical fairy tale and that “Bella’s quest for eternal youth and a literal happily-forever-after follows a tradition that has often governed the behavior of youth women in different way through the centuries” (48). Buttsworth closes her analysis of Bella with this final line: “all happily-ever-afters come at a cost, and the price Bella pays is her life” (67). This essay by Buttsworth is very intriguing as she asserts a position not very often seen in the Twilight world, however, she does not seem to be upset with Bella’s choice even though she sees the choice as the undesirable one.

Sections two and three of Twilight & History aim to give the reader a better historical setting and a background history of the members of the Cullen family and the Volturi. This is a noble goal to be sure and is very well done, as any Twi will now better understand the Saga characters and their actions and their mindsets. A deep understanding of the Twilight Saga characters in crucial and these essays further give the knowledge that needs to be known. However, as a historian, some small details seem a little out of place or not entirely accurate, yet, these do not change the message and the story across to the reader. The parallels made with the history to the Twilight Saga, however, is impeccable. Understanding Jasper, Rosalie, Alice, and Carlisle’s positions in life because of when they lived creates a deeper and more meaningful read for the Twilight Saga and Twilight & History gives that greater understanding.

One of the final essays in Twilight & History is written by Eveline Brugger where she talks about “Where Do the Cullens Fit In?” she concludes by reminding Twis that “since vampires don’t exist in the first place, it’s not much of a conclusion to say that Twilight vampires are fictional. It is valid, however, to conclude that vampire history and lore as they are presented in the Twilight series are almost entirely fictional, because not only do they contradict most European vampire myths, they also don’t correlate with general historical events from ancient times to the modern period” (242). This is a brilliant reminder to Twis to not delve too deep with the characters and history as there is a limit, and if Twis dig too deep they may find themselves too out of sorts and confused. Enjoy the history it is loosely connected with and that gives it meaning and move on, it is just fantasy, and a rather good one.

Twilight & History is a fabulous and incredible book that is a must reader for any and all Twi lovers, fans, or die-hards. They will not want to miss out of the analytical reviews of the relationships within the Saga or the further history that can do nothing but extended their knowledge and appreciation of the works that they love. Brilliant job to editor Nancy R. Reagin and the contributors of all the essays found in the book.

Author Dee Marie Says She’d Like to See Rob Star in an Adaptation of Her Book

Here’s an excerpt of an interview with Dee Marie, author of Sons of Avalon: Merlin’s Prophecy:

If this were to be made into a movie, who would you like to play the major roles?

I think every author ponders which Hollywood stars would best bring their characters to life. I did not have any specific actors in mind when I wrote the book. However, since its publication, I have been on a constant “talent search.” Now, when I watch a movie or television show, I scrutinize the cast for “possible” players in a movie version of Sons of Avalon: Merlin’s Prophecy.

This is my current casting call, which is always subject to change, due to the fluctuation of new talented streaming into Hollywood, or simply my fickle whims.

Lot: Robert Pattinson (Twilight) …I took a giant leap-of-faith with my imaginary casting of Robert Pattinson, as Sir Lot. I had only seen him briefly (playing a small part in two of the Harry Potter films). However, with the prospects of his staring role in the movie Twilight (based on the popular novel with the same name, and my current obsession with the vampire series), I have a gut feeling that no one but Robert could portray misunderstood anti-hero Lot.

Meleagant: Tom Sturridge (Vanity Fair) …At first I considered him for the role of Nentres. Yet, For purely selfish reasons (after all this is my fantasy casting call), I would be interested in watching him take on the challenging role of young man on a spiral decent into insanity.

^Hmm, I wonder if she knows that Rob & Tom are good friends? =P That would be quite the combination!

If you want to read more of the interview, and more of her fantasy casting, you can go here.

Twilight fans warming to Robert Pattinson’s new look for “Water for Elephants”

HollywoodNews.com: Reaction was mixed when fans saw the brand new ‘do belonging to Robert Pattinson’s “Water for Elephants” character, Jacob. Unofficial photos hit the web in the days preceding the start of production, but fans got a good look during Rob’s appearance last week on The Ellen Degeneres Show.

There is no clear verdict, but one thing is certain: fans are starting to warm to Rob’s new look. In addition to a flood of new fan art utilizing unofficial photos taken on the set of the film, many popular Rob blogs have begun trading Twilight-focused headers for flattering shots of Rob’s character in “Water for Elephants.”

Unlike the androgynous Edward Cullen, Jacob Jankowski is all man—complete with a burlier physique, ruddy cheeks, dirty hands, and a sheen of perspiration. Sure, his hair is shorter than Edward’s, but he makes up for it with a distinct brand of appeal. Many fans said the same of Rob’s “Bel Ami” character Georges Duroy, and are anxiously awaiting the look—and personality—of a grittier man.

Yet some fans who were “turned” into Rpattz fans by Twilight are still holding on Rob’s old coif. One of my Twitter followees, Robrator, tweeted it well this morning: “Dear Sex-Hair, Please come back to Rob soon. We miss you. XOXO.” At the end of the day, the preference is purely personal, though some purists would take Rob however he comes. Yet, for those of you who share Robrator’s sentiments on the matter, fear not. Said sex hair will return in “Breaking Dawn.”

Due to Rob’s shooting schedule for “Water for Elephants”, he will be absent for most “Eclipse” promo engagements that take place far outside of LA. Julia Jones “Impressed” by Rob

Julia Jones, who plays Leah Clearwater in “Eclipse”, mentioned Rob during an interview:

Julia Jones, shown at Griffith Park in Los Angeles, says that when she arrived on the “Eclipse” set, she was immediately impressed by the professionalism of her younger co-stars, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner. “My overall observation was that they just have it down. Kristen steps in and out of character. Rob – same thing. Taylor, too. It’s been incredible on a bunch of levels.” Of meeting heartthrob Pattinson, Jones said: “It did throw me a little bit when I was introduced to Rob and he had a British accent. I was like, oh right, he’s British.”

Kellan Interview

Before you began acting, you were a model. What about Calvin Klein underwear made you want to go back to modeling again?

I got into modeling because I was in a financial crisis. It was a great way to make money. I never thought I was pretty by any means. But it was great to be a part of that world. And the pinnacle of that world is to be on a billboard. I grew up wearing Calvin Klein. As a model, I dreamt of being Marky Mark, being on a billboard, and selling that company.

Speaking of Marky Mark, were you nervous about comparisons when shooting this campaign?
I was thrilled. I loved Marky-Mark’s campaign. And by no means was I trying to fill his britches or, uh, boxer-briefs. I was just stepping into them and doing my best to follow his footsteps. And that’s all I can hope and pray for. I think the audience has really enjoyed the campaign, so it’s nice to be a part of it.

Any surprises in store for the next “Twilight” movie, “Eclipse”?

It’s really tough for our characters — the movies are based on the books. So a lot of characters are like — they barely have lines, they’re barely in it. But you can’t rewrite the books. I’m just grateful to have a line or a purpose in there. But definitely, Emmett’s character and story grow immensely in “Eclipse.” You see the battle between the [vampire] newborns and you see the werewolves coming along. It’s a big fighting movie and that’s Emmett’s strength. So there’s the fighting and the big brother role, which is nice.

Since you were already in production, did you really have to prepare physically for this Calvin Klein campaign?

Well, I did. You know Emmett, my character, is more of the big guy. So I don’t need the washboard abs, just the size. I did a lot of push-ups and tons of protein. But for Calvin Klein, it’s underwear. So I called up my buddy Rich McDonald, who’s a personal trainer friend of mine. He put me on a great diet that took out the candy (which I love) and the carbs past 4 o’clock (which I break here and there). And he told me a great thing, which is to drink water as much as you can. ’Cause when you don’t drink water, your body needs to hold on to it to stay hydrated. So I started training with him and he got me into the shape that I need to be for the campaign. I trained for two weeks.

Have you seen the line of fans waiting outside for you?

No, I didn’t actually. But I love the fans. We in the “Twilight” franchise have the best fans. And it’s really cool to see them come out to something other than “Twilight,” you know? ’Cause then it feels more personal. Then they’re Kellan’s fans.
