Twilight Saga: Eclipse’ screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg says ‘Edward is very challenging to write’ – MakingOf.com posted an interview today with The Twilight Saga: Eclipse screenwriter, Melissa Rosenberg. In the interview, she talks about her writing process and which of the books from the series has been the toughest to adapt so far. She also offers a window into her favorite scene and most challenging character to write.
Though writing the adaptation of Eclipse from the bestselling book by Stephenie Meyer was a challenge for her, she said, she thinks this one is “probably my favorite.”
Her writing process is highly collaborative. She writes a detailed outline first, about 25 pages single-spaced, then she shows that around to the film’s producers, including Stephenie Meyer to make sure everyone’s “on the same page” and agree on the movie they want to make. She said her method comes a lot from working on television scripts.
Asked which character she finds most difficult to write, she said Edward. “Edward is very challenging to write,” she said. “He’s very serious. He’s also, as portrayed by Rob (Robert Pattinson), not verbose. So, you have to get across in as few words as possible his intention. He’s a very romantic character, too, so he’s always riding the line–you could really go toward the maudlin if you go too far in the direction of earnestness. So it’s keeping him dark and moody and spare and not falling over the line into the other side. So, he’s a challenge.”
