For four films (with one on the way) Peter Facinelli has played Forks’ resident doctor and head of the local vampire clan, Carlisle Cullen. Considering Carlisle’s medical degree, the plot of ‘Breaking Dawn‘ by all rights should be Carlisle’s big moment to shine playing, well, doctor with Bella’s half-vampire baby on the way. And shine he does, though not exactly in the sense you might expect. As stalwart protector of the clan, he fights for Bella’s health and risks life and limb to get her the nutrients (read: blood) she needs to see this through. But, (spoiler alert – though, seriously, does anyone at this point not know what’s in store?), just as Peter points out below, as doctors are apt to do with unpredictable little ones on the way – he misses the big moment. Below, Peter talks about being bummed about missing Bella’s birth scene, plus his emotional last day on set and saying goodbye to the Cullens.
At this point, Peter hadn’t seen the movie yet, so I had one up on him:
.
MYSPACE: Saw the movie last night, it was great!
.
PETER FACINELLI: Oh, good. I have not seen it yet.
.
MYSPACE: You haven’t?
.
PETER FACINELLI: No.
.
MYSPACE: Oh, my gosh.
.
PETER FACINELLI : I’ve been busy on Nurse Jackie, so I missed the screening. I’m going to go see it tonight.
.
MYSPACE: Well, it’s really good so you’ll love it. Considering that you’re done shooting the entire franchise, what was shooting like? Especially the wedding, because everyone coming together for a beautiful scene seems like it must have been a lot of fun for you guys.
.
(Peter is laughing, I’m clearly way off the mark)
.
MYSPACE: Or not…
PETER FACINELLI: It really wasn’t. I mean, it was difficult.
.
It was difficult in the sense that it was raining a lot and I remember we were shooting nights. It was very cold outside, it was wet, the ground was really muddy. We had tarps up protecting us from the rain, but every once in a while the tarp would break down and water would come plummeting down on some poor extra. I knew that none of that was going to show up on film and that it was going to look great — because without the rain, it really did look magical.
.
And, there were moments that were so magical, that you forgot all about the rain. Like when Bella was walking down the aisle, you know, and Billy Burke giving her away. Or where Bella and Edward exchanged vows – I mean, all of a sudden all of that rain and stuff vanished in my mind and you get sucked into this beautiful wedding. But the weather was challenging I think for everybody.
.
MYSPACE: Carlisle more than ever, gets to show his protective side, and he sides with Edward when it comes to the fate of Bella’s baby. Which is to say he doesn’t want her to go through with it. And the Cullen family is split on that issue.
.
PETER FACINELLI: It’s never easy when you have a family divided. And Carlisle is always the peace keeper and the person who tries to keep this family together. And to have such a divide and have a such a split, you know, somebody’s going to walk away unhappy, and as much as you can try to reason and be rational, somebody’s going to walk away not happy about it. I do remember the scene with Kristen, having to explain to her that she’s going to die if we don’t get rid of this baby. And it was a gut wrenching scene. I remember, you know, working with her and having to break that news to her, not just as a doctor, but as a family member, it’s like trying to tell somebody in your family that they’re terminally ill. It’s not the easiest news to break to them and it was emotionally hard.
