The final instalment of the much-adored Twilight saga is not in cinemas until late next year, but star Robert Pattinson is already setting his stern brow on an acting career that outlasts his popular vampire-dom.
Like his co-star Kristen Stewart, Pattinson will always have to live with the double-edged sword of phenomenal success they enjoyed with the Twilight series. But while Stewart has already received critical acclaim for her portrayal of Joan Jett in The Runaways, and is set to appear in another blockbuster next year – Snow White and the Huntsman – Pattinson’s professional path appears less certain.
He has already appeared without his blood-sucking party trick, enjoying moderate success in the contemporary romantic drama Remember Me. Now he is set to appear in the ensemble period piece Bel Ami – testing his acting chops against other established stars Kristin Scott Thomas, Uma Thurman and Christina Ricci. Bel Ami is set in colourful Paris, at the height of the city’s Belle Epoque, and Pattinson plays a love rat, which will test the loyalty of his Twi-hard flock.
