Nielsen: ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2’ Top-Selling Disc in 2013

Warner Home Video’s ‘Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,’ and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment’s James Bond actioner, ‘Skyfall,’ round out the year’s top-three packaged-media releases.
Lionsgate’s final Twilight movie, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2 was the top-selling retail release on DVD and Blu-ray Disc in 2013, according to new data from Nielsen.

The media measurement company said Warner Home Video’s Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment’s latest James Bond actioner, Skyfall, rounded out the top-three packaged-media releases of the year, which is based on aggregate disc unit sales (DVD, Blu-ray, Blu-ray/DVD Combo packs, etc.) from Dec. 31, 2012, to Dec. 1, 2013.

Rounding out the top 10 disc sellers of the year in order were Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment’s Wreck-It Ralph and Monsters University, followed by Hotel Transylvania from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment; Rise of the Guardians from Paramount Home Media Distribution; Disney’s Iron-Man 3; Fox’s The Croods and Paramount’s Star Trek Into Darkness.

Nielsen said that in 2012 consumers purchased 26% more DVD and Blu-ray titles during the week of Thanksgiving compared to the same period in 2011. Notably, disc sales during the week after Christmas — when sales are at their holiday season peak due to gift cards and discounts — fell 15% from 2011.

Indeed, discs sold the week after Christmas approached 7 million units in 2012, compared with almost 9 million units in 2011 and more than 10 million units sold in 2010.
