It’s the sort of movie that ladies like to go to in big groups together. Instead of selling single tickets, we will sell big groups.Bay City Cinemas manager Justin ChaneyThey’re known as “Twilight moms”, and adult fans of the Twilight saga are snapping up tickets to a marathon screening in Tauranga.
The third movie instalment of the Stephenie Meyer books hits cinemas in New Zealand on July 1, and “twihards” have been queuing up for tickets.
Bay City Cinemas will screen its first showing of Eclipse at 12.01am, as part of a seven-hour extravaganza after Twilight at 7pm and New Moon at 9.30pm.
And cinema manager Justin Chaney revealed it wasn’t “emo” teens queuing up for tickets, but adult women devoted to the books and movies.
“We advertised it on Facebook initially, and got a lot of comments. The majority of those people are mothers with young children, believe it or not,” Mr Chaney said.
“I was quite surprised, I was expecting it to be more of a younger audience.”
Tickets to the marathon screening went on sale last week, and already a cinema has almost sold out.
“As demand requires, we will add cinemas once it fills up.”
Although classified as teen fiction, the Twilight books and movies have struck a note with all ages.
There is even an American-based website devoted to adult fans of Stephenie Meyer – TwilightMOMS.com.
The first two movies in the Twilight saga had been “phenomenal” for New Zealand cinema. In Tauranga, New Moon had a three-month run.
