ABC12 Reviews “Eclipse”

Finally – a decent mix of action and romance from the Twilight phenomena

Rated: PG-13 for intense sequences of action and violence, and some sensuality.

There probably hasn’t been this much anticipation for a book-based film since Harry Potter. Unlike Harry Potter, though, author Stephenie Meyer and Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg have captured and kept the fans of the books and attracted new fans like me.

The film starts a little slowly with its classic reintroduction of the main characters; damsel Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), more determined than ever to become a vampire like her undead boyfriend, the gloomy heartthrob Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), a seasoned vampire who still hasn’t graduated high school and Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner), a Native American who shape-shifts into a wolf when necessary to protect his pack.

When an odd crime wave hits Seattle including a series of vicious killings, the Cullen clan investigates to discover a plan is brewing. The entire plot is hashed out by the red-headed vampire Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard). Her only goal is the destroy Bella by going through the Cullens any way possible to extract her vengeance.

With Bella as the target, Edward and Jacob are forced to contemplate the unthinkable: Forming an alliance in order to save the life of the one they both love. The ensuing battle is one that helps lift Eclipse to something more than just a romance.

The film has a good time poking fun at its strengths. The hatred between Edward and Jacob is beyond obvious this time around. At one point, Edward takes one look at Jacob and complains to Bella, “Doesn’t he own a shirt?”

The script offers more opportunities like this to wink at its own silliness, which adds to the magic.

I wish the film showed more indecision from Bella to make me truly believe Jacob had more of a shot with her.

Lautner really steals several scenes with his chiseled physique and with the acting, and not-so-subtle sparring with Edward.

It’s not over the top, but a good movie, especially for fans.
