Sara Gruen is out promoting her new book Ape House. In her interview with Dallas News she mentions how Water For Elephants almost didn’t get published due to it dealing with circuses and having an elephant as a main character.
“WhaIt didn’t fit any genre – people couldn’t decide if it was a romance or a murder mystery,” she says. “It had an elephant as a main character – and it was set in the world of circuses. Circuses? No one had any idea what to do with it.”
It was finally purchased by Algoquin Books and has now sold 3.7 million copies. The popular book has been made into film starring Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon.
What do you think of the casting for the movie of Water for Elephants? I think Robert Pattinson is really going to shine in that role. He’s so dedicated. This was a rough-and-tumble shoot, and when I was there on the set, he’d be lying in the dirt for 18 straight takes in a row, and he would nail every single one. He’s a nice guy, and he reads. He always has a book in his hand. My family got cameos. I’m in a scene where Rosie [the elephant] is raiding a produce stand.
