All South Africans want during the festive season is a bit of escapism. At least, that’s what local cinema releases and box office figures suggest.
However, this is not really supported by the fact that the two biggest movie distributors in the country, NuMetro and Ster-Kinekor, are aggressively advertising fantasy romance blockbuster The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, which premieres on November 16.
One can already see that Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner will be the most talked about actors during the holidays.
But, Twilight aside, the numbers from previous years suggest cinemagoers generally prefer animation and comedies during the festive season. The top five movies between the end of November and the beginning of January were either 3D fantasy and animation or comedies.
Though the South African film Jock of the Bushveld performed well, raking in R9.9-million , Hollywood films continued to dominate at the cinemas
