*SPOTLIGHT ON DAKOTA FANNING
Having long ago disproved skeptics who wondered if an impossibly
adorable, preternaturally confident one-time child star could survive
the vagaries of the industry—let alone adolescence—unscathed, Dakota
Fanning now shines as an even more accomplished young adult poised on
the cusp of thespian greatness. From her breakout appearance at age nine
in I Am Sam (for which she became the youngest-ever Screen Actors Guild
Award nominee), through expert performances in Man on Fire, War of the
Worlds, The Runaways, the Twilight series and The Secret Life of Bees
(MVFF, 2008) to a full- fledged leading-lady role in this year’s
Festival highlight Effie Gray, Fanning has demonstrated impressive range
and an admirable willingness to subvert her good-girl image (as in The
Motel Life, also screening this year; see page 50). With spectacular
acting chops and a mature perspective that belie her youth, Fanning is
no doubt one of her generation’s major talents.
EFFIE GRAY
Director: Richard Laxton
Based on true events that scandalized aristocratic circles of the
Victorian era, and penned by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Emma
Thompson, this sumptuous cinematic portrait explores the curiously brief
marriage and abrupt annulment of famed art critic John Ruskin and his
ethereal child bride, Effie Gray, played by a mesmerizing Dakota
Fanning. Click here to read more about, and get tickets to see Effie
Gray.
Join us for a Spotlight program featuring a conversation with Dakota Fanning and a screening of Effie Gray.
Miss. Fanning Will be presented with the MVFF Award, designed by
acclaimed Mill Valley artist Alice Corning. After the program, join us
