Xavier Samuel to star State Theatre Company 2014 season
dailytelegraph HOLLYWOOD heavyweights and Australian stage veterans star in a mix of the contemporary and the classic in STC’s 2014 season.
State Theatre Company's Artistic Director Geordie Brookman talks to Arts Editor Petra Starke about the exciting program.
THE SEAGULL February 21 to March 16 After more than a year of negotiations and trying to find the “right” project for him, former Adelaide lad turned Hollywood heart-throb Xavier Samuel will return home to play tortured playwright Konstantin Treplev in Anton Chekhov’s classic drama for the 2014 Adelaide Festival.
Renato Musolino joins him as writer Boris Trigoran and, after a decade-long absence, former State Theatre Company director Rosalba Clemente returns to the stage as Konstantin’s mother, fading actress Irina Arkadina.
“Any theatre maker dreams of working on Chekhov and I’m no different, but really what brought me to the play was the potential cast,” Brookman says.
“It was the idea of putting Xavier and Rosalba together in the piece as a mother and son pair that got me fired up about the project.”

THE SEAGULL
By Anton Chekhov
In a new adaptation by Hilary Bell
Should you ever need my life, take it, it's yours.
A paean to unrequited love, Anton Chekhov's The Seagull is quite simply one of the greatest plays of the modern era. Following the romantic and artistic conflicts between four characters: the famous middlebrow story writer Boris Trigorin, the ingénue Nina Zarechnaya, the fading actress Irina Arkadina, and her son the symbolist playwright Konstantin Tréplev, The Seagull explores emotion, creativity and romantic conflict with the incisive clarity of a doctor and the passionate heart of a poet.
A successful actress visits her brother's isolated estate far from the city, throwing the frustrated residents' unfulfilled ambitions into sharp relief. As her son attempts to impress with a selfpenned play, putting much more than his pride at stake, others dream of fame, love and the ability to change their past. Dissatisfaction is rife. Some desire love. Some desire success. Some desire artistic genius. No one, however, ever seems to attain happiness.
Brilliant young star Xavier Samuel (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Anonymous, Drift) returns to Adelaide and his first love, the stage, to play the tortured Konstantin and, after a decade long absence, Rosalba Clemente returns to our stage to play the formidable Arkadina. Joined by a cast of Adelaide's finest actors, they will deliver a sparkling new version of Chekhov's classic by celebrated Australian playwright Hilary Bell. The creative team behind The Kreutzer Sonata — director Geordie Brookman and set and lighting designer Geoff Cobham — return to the atmospheric surrounds of the State Theatre Company Scenic Workshop for this special Festival event.
"The Seagull was labelled a comedy, but it's a dark one that veers off into tragedy... in that sublimely concentrated way of Chekhov's."
