Learning about vampires, werewolves, and the love that comes in the triangle made by mixing in a human has been something that fans around the world have enjoyed reading about for years now. Then came the time for them to watch the bizarre love triangle on the big screen in The Twilight Saga. Now you officially sign up and learn everything you’ve ever wanted to know about the franchise by merely signing up for a college course.
Yes, you too can be a Twi-hard.
A full-length college course devoted to the Twilight phenomenon was announced back in March and now it has become a reality as it is available this fall at California State University. Fans, and non-fans, will be able to learn what it is like for vampires to sparkle, werewolves to live off the reservation, and the two species to battle it out for the love of a human being.
Course description: Examines the Twilight saga and the resulting fandom. Explores Twilight in relation to the social and cultural construction of gender and gendered identities in contemporary U.S. culture. Using an intersectional lens emphasizing gender, race, class, sexuality, and belief, provides foundations to think more deeply about popular culture and its impact. Covers vampire lore, the romantic core of the series, female characters and fans, the depiction of men and masculinity, religious contexts, race, and white privilege, the franchising of Twilight, and various cultural contexts such as abstinence only education and the rise of internet fandoms.
Interesting to say the last and it is sure to be filled to capacity no matter what time or day the course is featured on. Amazingly, Dr. Natalie Wilson, who will be teaching the course, is intending to offer the course to the public as much as possible. Dr. Wilson is running a blog detailing aspects of the course and that can all be checked out here.
The Twilight Saga has been one of the most successful film franchises in history with still two films yet to come. Breaking Dawn is the final chapter and will be split into two separate films in order not to cut out too much from the all important novel. Part One will be released on November 18, 2011 and Part Two will hit theatres on November 16, 2012. Filming will be going on in Vancouver and Baton Rouge, LA this fall.
Chances are this will not be the only Twilight themed college course and the fever will soon spread before long.
