Boo Boo Stewart and his band 5L recently did an interview with Creative Spotlights where they talked about their music.
Here’s an excerpt from Creative Spotlights:
It’s impossible not to feel the excitement that fills the air when the band 5-L discusses their career. Interviewed by our own Jacob Kupin after a show with Aaron Carter and Ryan Cabrera, the four-month old (or new, in this case) group consists of four young artists, including siblings BooBoo and Fivel Stewart. BooBoo, guitarist and singer, is most known for his role as Seth Clearwater in the Twilight movies. His sister Fivel, who will be turning sixteen in November, is the lead singer, rocking beautiful dark and oozing confidence that never lets her age show.
BooBoo had a recording deal with Walt Disney Records while Fivel was in a group called “My Allowance.” The two siblings were on tour together. “We kind of decided to do our own thing, so we started our own group together,” said BooBoo, who at the time was “kind of doing a rockband with, actually, Davin.” Davin Baltazar now plays the bass in 5-L. As someone who truly believes in his music, Davin’s energy is contagious. And finally, through a mutual friend, the three musicians met their drummer, Ryan Cook, who got his first drum kit as a toddler. “And yeah,” said BooBoo, “we just kind of came together as a group.”
So how did these kids manage to get on tour with big guys like Aaron and Ryan? They moved quickly and ambitiously, headlining the DigiTour in March, despite the fact that, as Fivel stated, only “a couple of weeks before that, we just officially became a group.” For those who have not heard of the DigiTour, it brings popular YouTube musicians around the United States. Davin was the one to call the DigiTour, “and one of the promoters here, he wanted us to come back,” he told us. “So we came back.” The group agreed that being brought back to Pennsylvania to play at Crock Rock was “very awesome.”
For a new operation, these guys have certainly had some enthralling experiences. The DigiTour was very thrilling for them. “I’ve never really done, like, major tours,” Davin said. According to Fivel, the month that the group spent together during the DigiTour was amazing. “We got to know each other a lot more…and we still like each other.” The group agreed that spending time together while being on tour was one of the most exciting moments they have had so far. “It’s cool that we have a big network to get to know each other,” Davin commented.
It is not a surprise that they were asked to return by promoters. Their music has a dancey, top 40 vibe-according to Ryan, there is a bit of “Britney Spears with kind of like a Chris Brown kind of sound.” With catchy electro-pop beats mixed with awesome guitar riffs, 5-L produces music that a crowd simply has to move to. Fivel sings her heart out and dances onstage, along with dancers Bruce and Meagan, who all look like they are having a blast. These guys reap benefits unknown to many solo-artists in the electro-pop genre because they work together. While many solo artists have their material written for them, 5-L co-writes all of their music. They are also working with folk/pop/rock singer-songwriter Jonathon Thulin, as well as with Sean Cook, Ryan’s 21 year-old-brother. All members agree that they are lucky to have a family feel within their new operation.
5-L’s most recent collaboration with Jonathon and Sean is going to appear in the end credits of the upcoming SciFi version of “Hansel and Gretel,” starring none other than BooBoo and Fivel themselves. As in real life, they will be playing brother and sister. Engaging in both music and movies simultaneously proves the sibling duo to be even more of a powerhouse. They balance each other out well, too. “Being in the movie business is my favorite thing, but I like playing guitar” BooBoo said. Fivel is the opposite, but still happy to do both. “My main goal is to be a singer, but I love doing movies. It’s a different environment.”
